Medical micro-needling is considered a safe non-invasive, effective procedure with a low rate of adverse affects. It is a cosmetic skin procedure that promotes and accelerates natural skin regeneration and repair. It is a type of collagen induction therapy which is stimulated as the body repairs itself when it encounters a perceived external stimulus such as needling, cuts or abrasions. The body’s stem cells are activated which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin up to 400% after 3 sessions. Micro-needling is a procedure that improves fine lines and wrinkles, crows feet, hyperpigmentation, skin scarring from acne or surgery. The epidermis and melanocytes in the basal layer keep their integrity and this is done by piercing micro channels between .5 and 2.5 through the epidermis (top layer) of the skin and into the dermis (middle layer) of the skin. The creation of micro channels induces a controlled skin injury with minimal epidermal damage and stimulates dermal wound healing cascade (inflammation, proliferation and remodelling) to take place. This leads to the release of platelet derived growth factor (FGF), fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor alpha and beta. (TGF-a, TGF-b). This is done with a micro-needling pen that has a needle cartridge with small fine sterile needles attached and which glides over the skin several times on a base of herbal serums that are formulated in Oriental medicine’s herbal pharmacopia and apple stem cell hyaluronic acid. 

Post treatment recovery is fast and with its impressive clinical results, micro needling is a valuable alternative to more invasive procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and deep chemical peels.

WHAT DOES MICRO-NEEDLING TREAT?

 

Loss of elasticity and epidermal thickness.

AM I A SUITABLE CANDIDATE?

 

If you suffer from any of the following micro needling is not indicated:

Keloids or raised scars, raised moles or warts, extensive broken capillaries, pustular acne, active bacterial viral or fungal skin infections. Active herpes labialis. Cosmetic facial surgery in the past 6 months.  Patients taking blood thinners, heart immunosuppression medications, chemotherapy, diabetes, botox (wait 2 weeks). Fillers, microblading, platelet rich plasma, IPL (laser) wait 4 weeks.

 

WHAT IS MICRO-NEEDLING USEFUL FOR?

 

It’s useful for skin scarring issues from injuries or acne, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. It also helps shrink pores and tightens the skin. It’s practically like reverse ageing. Everything simply looks smoother, firmer and younger afterwards.

 

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT?

 

On arrival to the clinic you can relax on the table where a numbing cream is applied and a red lamp therapy light is placed over your face. If you wish to have a mini acupuncture treatment while lying down we can do this at this point on distal points of the body. We let the cream sit for about 20 minutes and place you under the Omega light therapy lamp (see below) until you can’t feel anything. Once you are numb, herbal serums are applied to the skin which are absorbed up to 3000% more with micro needling. We begin needling over and back across the face, neck and chest area. Once the entire face has been treated, I like to press harder on target areas like crows feet, smile lines, and scars. The entire treatment takes up to 50 minutes.

 

WHAT WILL MY FACE LOOK LIKE AFTER A TREATMENT?

 

There will be slight reddening of the face afterward and this may last for 24 hours. 

This varies for everyone. There may be dryness in patches and by day 5 your skin will be back to normal. I’d say a week of redness/bruising is the maximum downtime thought this is unusual. Aloe vera can help reduce redness. Stay out of the sun and do not use facial soap. No make-up on the day of treatment. 

 

HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE RESULTS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

 

Clients report noticing a difference by week 4 and the results get continuously better for the next 2-5 months.

 

DOES IT HELP WITH PIGMENTED/DEEP SCARS OR UNEVEN SKIN TONE?

 

Yes. The deeper the scar, the more sessions it may take to see a result you’re happy with. There is generally at 60-70% improvement in scars within 4-6 treatments. Also, the higher your pain tolerance, the “harder” and more “intense” can be with the tool, which will help produce results faster.

 

HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT BETWEEN TREATMENTS?

 

3 to 4 weeks on average is a good time to wait.  This gives the skin a chance to breathe and settle down, and it also gives you a chance to start seeing results. Three treatments 4 weeks apart is standard for best results but it also depends on your age and skin condition. Older clients may need extra treatments for desired results. 

 

HOW MANY TREATMENTS SHOULD I GET?

 

This is completely up to you and the condition being treated. 3-4 treatments are recommended for mild to moderate acne scarring. For deeper scars expect 6. After those treatments are done, it’s a good idea to schedule a maintenance needling once every 6-12 months to keep things looking fresh, smooth, and bright.

 

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THE RESULTS AFTERWARD?

 

You shouldn’t really see results ‘fade’ unless your daily routine is lacking. Stay hydrated and eat a clean diet. For products a nice vitamin C serum will prevent hyperpigmentation and a good sunscreen is also recommended.

WHAT IS NANO-NEEDLING?

Nano-needling uses the same typo of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge has 81 silicone tips.  These microscopic hair-like separate the cells within the epidermis to allow active products to be pushed into the skin.  Nano-needling only affects the epidermis, treatment within the upper .15mm of the skin.
